We’ve introduced a new series to The Man Shake – Ask Adam. Ask Adam is a social segment where you have the opportunity to ask Adam your burning Man Shake, health, motivation, workout and weight loss questions via The Man Shake Facebook or submit your questions here.

We’ve complied Adam’s three commonly asked questions as a kick starter for motivation, no matter what stage of your weight loss journey you’re at.

I lost weight quickly, but now I’m finding it harder to shift the last 10kgs to hit my goal weight. Do you have any tips to maintain motivation?

I sure do! My number one tip is - don’t rely on motivation to achieve your weight loss goals. Motivation will get you started but habits are what are going to get you the results you need in the long term. Habits are the most important things; they are the little things we do every single day.

So don’t try and think you’re going to wake up one day and you’re going to be full of motivation, and then you’re going to start losing weight. It's about putting in these small steps on a daily basis that develop little habits to allow you to achieve your weight loss goals.

For example, focus on getting better sleep; going to bed at a certain time every single night. Waking up first thing in the morning and having your Man Shake, making sure you’re drinking enough water, making sure after your big meals you get up and walk for a couple of minutes. These are little habits that will add up to huge success for you. So don’t wait to get motivated, try and change your small little habits.

What are your tips on managing expectations from mates or family when going to events and BBQs? “One more beer won’t kill you,” “One ice cream won’t hurt.” etc.

My tip here is, don’t try and stay on your diet on these special occasions. That's where The Man Shake’s so great. Weight loss is all about calories in, versus calories out. So therefore, if you eat too much and then you don’t burn it, you’re going to put weight on.

But weight loss just doesn’t happen over one day, it happens over a long period of time. So, you’re allowed to actually have these periods where you do burst out and have a little bit of a break. An actual fact is that research has shown that what we call a ‘diet break’ can actually increase your metabolic rate, and help you lose weight.

So, whatever you do, don’t be unsociable. The key to a great weight loss program is something that is sustainable, something that is sociable, and something that is practical, and simple. And that’s what The Man Shake program is. So, enjoy them beers, enjoy that bit of birthday cake, life is short, make sure you enjoy it – and once again, thanks for your support!

Hey Adam, I’m just starting out on my Man Shake journey, what is one small change I can make to help kick-start my weight loss?

Well, for me it’s all about accountability. So, keep a food diary. An actual fact science shows is that when people are trying to lose weight they underestimate how much they eat by up to 40%. That's right, 40%! So, you’re probably putting a lot more food in your gob than you realise and you’re in a bit of denial. So the key is to write down every single thing that you eat and drink as well. Because a lot of us don’t even consider that the milk we put in tea and coffee and the little tablespoon of sugar here and there and the bit of chocolate or the other little snacks that we have – soft drinks are another big example. So, hold yourself accountable, keep a food diary and I’m sure you’re going to be shocked to see how much you actually eat.
