Weight Loss Tips from Real Man Shakers (Straight from The Man Shakers community)

When it comes to weight loss, the best advice doesn’t come from influencers or fitness models. It comes from everyday blokes who’ve been through it, juggling work, family, stress, bad habits, and still finding a way to get results.

We asked real Man Shakers what helped them most. Here are their best tips, in their own words.

1. Don’t Overcomplicate It, Start Small

One of the biggest mistakes men make is trying to change everything overnight.

Dave summed it up perfectly: “Make small, sustainable changes, you don't need to overhaul your life overnight. Little changes done consistently add up to big results.”

Jacob agrees that success comes from sticking at it: “It is a marathon, not a sprint. You need to keep at it and not just have 1–2 a week and expect a change.”

Weight loss isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being consistent.

Remember: Consistency > Perfection.

2. Set Small Goals You Can Actually Hit

Big goals are great, but small wins keep you going.

Jacob shared one of the most practical mindset tips: “Make small goals… people only see the big goal and they don’t properly see the progress they actually make.”

Smashing smaller goals builds confidence, and confidence builds momentum. Want to lose 40kg? Set a small goal of 5kg, then 10kg. It’s important to celebrate PROGRESS!

3. Take Photos (They’ll Keep You Motivated)

A lot of blokes don’t realise how far they’ve come until they see it.

Dion recommends keeping it simple: “Take a before photo, so you can see your achievements.”

Sometimes the mirror shows progress long before the scales do. It can be confronting to take photos at the start, but they are a great marker of progress along the way.

4. Focus on Protein and Staying Full

One of the biggest challenges with weight loss is hunger.

Neil shared a simple tip that many men swear by: “Protein is key to not being hungry.”

Instead of constantly fighting cravings, prioritising protein makes it easier to stay on track. Neil also adds: “Feed your body ingredients that you enjoy consuming, and that support your body maintenance.”

Because if your plan feels miserable, it won’t last.

5. Track Your Food (Even Just for Awareness)

A lot of men underestimate how much they’re eating until they actually track it.

Jacob put it bluntly: “You don't realise how many calories you consume in a day until you start counting them properly.”

Even if you don’t track forever, doing it for a short time can be a game-changer for awareness. This includes liquid calories as well.

6. Shift Your Mindset (It’s Not Just About Food)

Weight loss is physical but sticking to it is mental. Neil recommends changing your internal language: “Change your internal language from ‘I have to’ to ‘I want to.’”

And Dave reminds everyone not to get caught comparing: “Stop comparing yourself to others your journey is yours.”

Because this isn’t anyone else’s battle. It’s yours. Comparison is a killer of progress and can cause us to get discouraged when we aren’t seeing the results others may be seeing. Keep the focus on you and your journey. Learn from others – but only compare yourself with yourself – one week ago, one month ago.

7. Expect Real-Life Temptation (And Laugh About It)

Not every part of the journey is serious, sometimes you just need to get through the hard moments with humour.

Michael nailed what every dad has experienced: “Watching the missus and kids inhale a meat lovers pizza while you’re sipping your Choc Mint requires the mental discipline of a Shaolin Monk.”

And his advice for early days? “Never trust a fart in Week 1. Just... don't. You’ve been warned.”

8. Don’t Do It Alone, Join the Community!

A lot of men try to do weight loss quietly, on their own… and that’s where they get stuck.

Dion keeps it simple: “Join the Man Shakers support page.”

And Jacob explains why the group works so well:

“Post your progress and talk to the other people in the group… Everyone in this group is so positive and help you however they can.”

Support and accountability can be the difference between giving up and pushing through. This group is all about supporting one another and seeing each other WIN!
